What is the difference between a serum and a cream?
Share
A frequently asked question in the salon: "Should I use a serum or a cream?" The answer is: preferably both. But the order and purpose are different. Diana calmly explains.
What does a serum do?
A serum is a lightweight liquid with a high concentration of active ingredients. Think of vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, or peptides. Due to their small molecular size, serums penetrate deeper into the skin than a cream.
A serum is targeted. You choose it based on a specific skin need: hydration, pigmentation, aging, glow, or repair. It is not general care but a targeted treatment.
What does a cream do?
A cream works on a different level. It replenishes moisture, strengthens the skin barrier, and creates a protective layer. A cream also seals in the active ingredients of your serum, allowing them to work longer.
A good day cream protects the skin throughout the day. A night cream supports the recovery process while you sleep.
Do you need both?
For most people: yes. A serum addresses a specific skin problem. A cream provides daily hydration and protection. They complement each other rather than doing the same thing.
Do you have dry or dehydrated skin? Then a hydrating serum combined with a richer cream is a logical choice. Do you want to work on pigmentation or aging? Then choose a serum with the right active ingredient and use the cream as a regular base.
When can you use only a cream?
If your skin is well-balanced and has no specific concerns, a good cream is sufficient. This also applies if you are just starting a new routine and want to build up slowly.
