What really helps against hyperpigmentation?
Share
Pigmentation spots are one of the most common skin complaints Diana sees in her salon. They appear gradually, are difficult to hide, and require the right approach. But with patience and the right products, a lot is possible.
What causes pigmentation spots?
Pigmentation spots are caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its color. The most common causes are UV radiation, hormonal changes such as during pregnancy or contraception, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after acne or skin damage.
Sun is by far the biggest culprit. Every time the skin is exposed to UV radiation unprotected, it stimulates melanin production. Existing spots darken, and new ones can appear.
Which ingredients really help?
Vitamin C
Vitamin C inhibits the enzyme involved in melanin production and simultaneously has an antioxidant effect. Use it in the morning before your SPF. Results are visible after 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide inhibits the transfer of melanin to skin cells and has an evening effect. It is mild, combines well with other active ingredients, and is suitable for daily use.
AHA acids
Alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid and lactic acid accelerate cell renewal and help existing pigmentation fade faster. Use them in the evening and always in combination with SPF during the day.
Retinol
Retinol stimulates cell renewal and helps to even out skin tone in the long term. Start low and build up gradually, always use in the evening.
What can you realistically expect?
Pigmentation spots do not fade in a week. Expect at least 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use for visible results. Deeper or older spots sometimes take longer. Patience and consistency are key here.
