Why Cleansing Is the Most Important Step in Your Skincare Routine
Share
Cleansing is often seen as the simplest step. But it is precisely the most crucial one. Everything you apply afterwards – serum, cream, treatment – works better on a thoroughly cleansed skin.
What exactly does cleansing do?
Throughout the day, all sorts of things accumulate on your skin: sebum, sweat, fine dust, make-up residue, and sunscreen. At night, your skin produces waste products during the recovery process. If you don't remove these, they clog pores, disrupt the skin barrier, and reduce the effectiveness of your other products.
Cleansing removes all of that. It returns the skin to a neutral, clean state where the rest of your routine can work optimally.
Morning or evening cleansing, or both?
Evening: always
Evening cleansing is the most important. You remove everything the day has left behind. If you don't, you sleep with dirt on your skin while it tries to recover. That's a bad combination.
Morning: depends on your skin
For most people, a quick morning cleanse is advisable. Your skin produces sebum overnight, and you want to rinse that away before applying serum and cream. Do you have dry or sensitive skin? Then lukewarm water might sometimes be sufficient.
What type of cleanser suits your skin?
- Cleansing milk or lotion: Gentle and nourishing. Ideal for dry, sensitive, or mature skin.
- Cleansing gel: Fresher and cleanses a bit deeper. Suitable for normal to oily skin.
- Micellar water: Convenient for removing light make-up. Not always sufficient as a complete cleanse.
- Cleansing oil or balm: Excellent for removing make-up and sunscreen. First step in a double cleanse.
Double cleansing: when do you need it?
If you wear make-up or use a strong SPF, one cleanse is sometimes not enough. Double cleansing means: first an oil or balm to dissolve make-up and sunscreen, then a water-based cleanser to truly clean the skin.
Not everyone needs this. Do you wear little make-up and use a light SPF? Then one good cleanser is sufficient.
